A baby in Salvia taking first steps on a wooden floor

salvia, sage.

Salvia is named after the sage that grows wild in the garden of our workshop in Monte Urano.

We designed it for a child standing on the soles of their own feet for the first time: soft leather, a thin sole, a wide toe box. The shoe doesn’t steer the foot. The foot feels the ground, the toes spread, and balance finds its own way. The little flower perforations on the sides let air in, and the artisan punches each one by hand, so they sit slightly differently on every pair.

Six steps in the workshop
  1. Disegnato · Design

Through 2025 and 2026 the last was redrawn three times, based on foot measurements from 41 children in our Founding Families.

  2. Pelle · Leather

The leather comes from Santa Croce sull’Arno. Every hide is checked by hand, and any flawed areas are left out of the cut.

  3. Taglio · Cutting

11 pieces are cut by hand for each pair.

  4. Cucito a mano · Hand stitching

The flower perforations and edge stitching are done by hand: about 2 hours per pair.

  5. Montaggio · Lasting

The sole is stitched on over the last; glue is used only to hold things in place temporarily.

  6. Consegnato · Delivery

Comes in the Misura box, whose lid is a foot measurer.

  • In the consultation, the physiotherapist asked about his barefoot time before talking about shoes. I wasn’t expecting a call that wasn’t about selling, and it felt good.

  • Our Founding Family number is on the sole; I’ll show my daughter when she’s older. We traced her footprint on the lid of the box.

Care
  • Brush off dust with a soft, dry brush; dab marks away with a slightly damp cloth.
  • If they get wet, stuff them with paper and let them dry at room temperature, away from radiators and direct sun.
  • Once a month, apply a thin coat of a colourless, natural leather cream.
  • Do not machine wash. Over time the leather darkens and carries the imprint of your child’s steps; this is natural.
