Setting up
Mr Wolf stands at one end of the space with his back to the players. The players line up behind a line at the other end; this line is also “home”.
The story of the game
This game teaches young children to count their steps while also practising quick changes of direction. Every time Mr Wolf turns round for “dinner time”, a getaway begins that ends in laughter.
How to play
- The players ask all together: “What’s the time, Mr Wolf?”
- Mr Wolf calls out a time, for example “Three o’clock!”, and the players take three steps forward.
- This carries on until, whenever he likes, Mr Wolf shouts “Dinner time!” and turns round.
- The players run back home to the starting line. Whoever Mr Wolf catches becomes the wolf for the next round.
Variations (2)
- Add kinds of steps: “Four o’clock, bunny steps!” (jumping), “Two o’clock, giant steps!”
- Indoors, instead of running, everyone becomes a statue at “Dinner time!”.
For parents
With three-year-olds, be Mr Wolf yourself and catch them slowly. Count out loud together.
What to wear on their feet
Non-slip shoes with a flexible sole.
Safety
Keep the getaway area clear of obstacles. Indoors, make it a walking-only rule instead of running. Always play these games with an adult watching, in a way that suits your child’s age and the surface underfoot. Keep games with small pieces (marbles, five stones, mangala) away from children under 3.
