The first thing to touch the foot.

Four layers: upper, lining, insole, outsole. We tell you where each one comes from.

The four layers of a child's shoe side by side on the bench: leather upper, lining, insole, outsole

Small differences show the material is natural.

  • Variations in tone

Vegetable tanning doesn’t cover natural marks with dye.

  • Marks in the grain

Pores and fine lines are not flaws; they are the leather itself.

  • Darkening over time

The leather darkens, softens and takes the shape of your child’s step.

Vegetable-tanned calf leather, 1.2 mm. Tanning: vegetable (chestnut and mimosa tannins). It wraps the top of the foot and holds it without squeezing.

Leather: vegetable tanning and LWG

Most leather is tanned with chrome in a few days. Ours is tanned with chestnut and mimosa tannins, over several weeks.

Vegetable tanning

  • Tannins from bark and fruit (chestnut, mimosa)
  • It takes weeks; the leather comes out firm and full
  • It darkens over time and takes the shape of the foot
  • Salvia, Nuvola, Passerotto, Giardino, Trifoglio, Olivo, Rondine, Prima, Cavallino, Pedale, Bosco

Three exceptions

Fiocco and Neve use chrome-free LWG tanning; Ninna has no leather, it is wool felt.

Why?

Vegetable tanning can’t give Fiocco’s patent finish or Neve’s water-repellent suede the same result, so for these two models we use the chrome-free, metal-free tanning of LWG-certified tanneries. Ninna has no leather: it is 100% wool felt from the Sibillini mountains. The table below and the product pages show which method each model uses.

What is LWG?

An international organisation that audits tanneries on water, chemicals and traceability. Our tanneries:

  • LWG Gold

    Conceria del Poggio

    Santa Croce sull’Arno, Tuscany

Salvia, Passerotto, Giardino, Trifoglio, Olivo, Rondine, Pedale

  • LWG Silver

    Conceria Valle Chiara

    Ponte a Egola, Tuscany

    Nuvola, Neve, Prima

  • Outside LWG scope

    Lanificio dei Sibillini (felt)

    Amandola, Marche

  • LWG Gold

    Conceria Lanfranchi Fermo

Linings and soles

Lining: the side that touches the skin

Babies’ feet sweat a lot; our linings breathe.

Which lining?

Chrome-free goatskin, OEKO-TEX certified cotton-linen fabric (Filatura della Valle, Biella) or, in winter boots, natural sheepskin. Our first-steps soft shoes have no lining at all; the inside of the leather is sanded smooth and no seam is left inside.

Sole: thin, flexible, natural rubber

1.5–5 mm of natural rubber, stitched to the upper. A thin sole lets the foot feel the ground.

Where the soles come from

Our outsoles are made from natural rubber (Hevea) at the Suolificio Adriatico workshop, 8 km from Monte Urano. Crawling and first-steps models have suede leather soles.

Work to trace where the rubber comes from is under way; we will share the results in the annual report.

Leather care

  • Brush off dust with a soft, dry brush; dab marks away with a slightly damp cloth.
  • If they get wet, stuff them with paper and let them dry at room temperature, away from radiators and direct sun.
  • Once a month, apply a thin coat of a colourless, natural leather cream.
  • Do not machine wash. Over time the leather darkens and carries the imprint of your child’s steps; this is natural.
